Are You Islamophobic or a Realist?

In the United States the term Islamophobia was popularized by political forces in the aftermath of 9/11. In a way, the terms owes it existence and fame to the 19 Islamists from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt, and Lebanon who struck fear into the hearts of Americans on 9/11 while at the same time creating confusion about Islam and division among Muslims. At home, in order to eliminate the fear of Islam, two tools were acquired mostly by the political forces within the U.S. to protect Muslims in America.

13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher has been reviewed by Focus on the Family’s marriage and parenting magazine.

Clay Jensen doesn’t know why Hannah Baker committed suicide, but he’s about to find out. Before she died, Hannah recorded a set of cassette tapes, one side for each of the 13 reasons she chose to take her life. Each reason relates to a person. Each of those 13 people must listen to her tapes, then pass the set on to the next person. And Clay is one of them.

When the tapes arrive in the mail, Clay is confused. Aside from making out with Hannah at a recent party, he didn’t know her well. Despite her loose reputation, he really liked her, and he would never have done anything to hurt her. Surely there was a mistake; he can’t be responsible for Hannah’s suicide. But Hannah has threatened that the tapes will be made public if he doesn’t follow her instructions. So he pops the first tape into an old stereo system in his parents’ garage.

It is not an exaggeration to say that Islam is now living through its proverbial dark ages. In my view, the material issue is not whether one calls for an Islamic reformation, or for a return to an original moral and humanistic Islamic tradition. The point is that as Muslims confront acts of extreme ugliness committed in their religion’s name, they have no choice but to take a long pause, and to critically evaluate where things might have gone wrong. In essence, Muslims have no choice but to reengage morality in order to generate an effective social rebirth.

Another London Attack, and Another Lesson

The difference this time around is the target audience—which is the Muslim community. It seems that London cannot get a break. The extremely diverse city that once held the status of being the capital […]

Divided New York City, An Invitation For Terrorists

Those who love New York City and celebrate its diversity seem to be less concerned about the political divide within the city. Unfortunately, protesters of all kinds make this city their destination of choice to make their opinion known. Perhaps protesters should hold their protest campaigns in Washington D.C., where law makers, and representatives of […]
